PS.NET/RMS - Architecture
Fully integrated information
  Total Solution
PS.NET/RMS is a total solution; it handles RMS requirements throughout the Department.

System Architecture
The system utilizes personal computer based workstations for each operator on the system and separate computers, termed application servers, for support processing. A high speed local area network is used to interconnect all system components and standard gateways and bridges used to interconnect to external systems. Just as importantly, the PS.NET/RMS software is also distributed and makes maximum use of the hardware.  Application software resides in the individual workstations, in the dedicated application servers, and in the gateway processors.

PS.NET/RMS is compatible with most manufacturer’s hardware and most network operating systems.  PS.NET/RMS can complement and work with your existing installed network and existing PC's.  Standard PC's running the familiar Microsoft Windows are used at all operator positions.  This provides an intuitive point-and-click operation that provides more information to the user and minimizes training requirements.

  External System Interfaces
Individual processors are also used as gateways to connect PS.NET/RMS to remote systems such as local or regional records systems, State message switching systems, or National inquiry databases.  Use of a separate gateway processor for each external system interconnect simplifies interface programming and helps maintain overall system performance.

When the optional Matrix gateway is interfaced to the system, all queries against and input into remote databases can be conducted directly from the workstation.  This feature negates the need for separate inquiry terminals.  PS.NET/RMS provides convenient data masks that feature on-line editing and automatic syntax conversion, eliminating free form command syntax required with many systems.

Local Area Network
The communication backbone for PS.NET/RMS is a standard local area network (LAN).  The local area network allows for very high speed communications between system components at rates over 1000 times faster than the serial data links used in traditional systems.  Most standard local area network topologies and operating systems can be utilized.  Wide area network (WAN) capabilities are used in multi-location operations.

Data Base Management System
PS.NET/RMS keeps all user data in a Microsoft SQL Server relational database management system.  The use of a database management system offers numerous advantages over flat-file and indexed structures used in traditional systems.  This database is known for its high performance, high reliability, ease of use, and low procurement and operating cost.

System Expansion
PS.NET/RMS is the first system to fully embrace an open systems architecture based on international standards and highly modular components.  PS.NET/RMS is designed to utilize operating systems and system software based on international standards and generally available from most major computer manufacturers.  This provides protection against obsolescence, improves portability, and allows maximum freedom of choice in selection of computer hardware.

This is an open architecture system that is compatible with hundreds of third party software packages.  Agencies can use their favorite tools to access the database and generate special reports and meet ad-hoc reporting requirements.

PS.NET/RMS is also expandable.  Small centers can install full-function, high performance systems on inexpensive personal computer hardware.  Larger centers can install progressively larger central server hardware to meet their requirements.  All departments can incrementally expand the system as requirements dictate without costly swap-out of central CPU hardware.

System Reliability and Redundancy
PC/network systems of the size utilized are inherently reliable.  All routine maintenance services are fully automated and do not require taking the system offline.

Most agencies operate without redundant hardware.  For those agencies that demand the utmost in reliability, however, inexpensive redundant or fault tolerant configurations can be supplied.
